Roppongi Restaurant & Sushi Bar
Address: 875 Prospect Street, La Jolla, CA 92037
Seated among the swank décor, cool lighting and plush booths at Roppongi’s, there’s no shortage of delicious delights. A typical evening might begin with a Sake-tini and a bite from Sushi Chef’s Shinji Okano’s sushi bar like the Albacore Jalapeño Roll. Next, the Asian tapas menu offers a seemingly endless selection of small dishes as varied as traditional chicken satay and shrimp and scallop potstickers with tobiko caviar sauce. The dinner menu is equally tantalizing, filled with Chef Stephen Window’s unique “new Asian cuisine” creations. Sommelier Megan Burgess presents an extensive award-winning wine list that is as varied as Chef Window’s cuisine, and desserts like Tahitian Bananas offer a decadent conclusion.

Cafe Japengo
Address: 8960 University Cntr. Dr., La Jolla, CA 92122
While hidden from the road in the La Jolla UTC area, Cafe Japengo should not be missed. The upscale restaurant offers what is consistently dubbed the best sushi in San Diego as well as inventive Pacific Rim Cuisine. Executive Chef Jay Payne excels in crafting fresh, often exotic ingredients in innovative ways, with tantalizing dishes that almost threaten to overshadow the sushi. Wasabi Sushi
Address: 2662 Garnet Avenue, San Diego, CA 92109
The Wasabi Sushi sign is prominent almost as soon as you turn off the highway onto Garnet Avenue. What the sign doesn’t convey, however, is the quality that awaits you inside. Sit at the 17-seat sushi bar, in the recently renovated dining room, or on the serene outdoor patio, and treat yourself to some of the tastiest sushi around. The mostly traditional sushi menu offers over 40 rolls, plus an array of nigiri and sashimi. Try the sushi and sashimi combos for sampling, or try to select just a few of the special rolls—each one is more tempting than the last. The house specialty is the Wasabi Special Roll, featuring lobster, avocado, and shrimp tempura topped with albacore, green onion, masago and ponzu sauce. But no matter what you order, the fish is fresh, the prices are reasonable and, the staff friendly and accommodating.
